It hasn’t quite been the pre-season that we had hoped for or had planned, but now that the sun has finally come out, the pitches have begun to dry – the cricket season is now in full swing at Falkland!
Following a hugely successful pre-season social, there have already been a few cricketing highlights on the pitch including the 1st XI kicking off their season with a comprehensive league win, Richard Morris returning home with a splendid century. A 5-wicket haul for young Tom Seaward in the Saturday Development team and 2 wins out of 2 for both of our Wednesday night league teams. Justin Smith has also started the season in fine form with a century for the Sunday side.
Our junior teams are now up and running with training and games, and there has been a fantastic take up of places in both our boys and girls junior sections. It has also been great to see lots of our 1st XI players supporting this area of the club with coaching, as we look to develop the youth pathway system over the next few years. Supporting the junior set up huge numbers have started the All Stars and Dynamos programme, and the ground really does look a picture on a Saturday morning with so many youngsters enjoying cricket.
Credit must go to Chris Brown who has had to battle with not only the weather elements to get both grounds fit for action, but also a numerous amount of keen cricketers desperate to get on the pitch playing (including myself!) – well done Brownie.
As a club we continue to work hard in the background to make Falkland an aspirational place to play cricket. This has clearly been recognised by others as next Tuesday 23rd May – we will be hosting the first ever game of professional cricket in Berkshire! Our Enborne Lodge ground will play host to a T20 in the Charlotte Edwards Cup between Southern Vipers v South East Stars professional women’s teams. The match starts at 11am and it will be free entry for anyone that would like to come down and watch. It would be great to see as many club members, family and friends there as possible in what will be an historic day at the club.
For those of you putting on your pads again for the first time, or digging out your whites and Falkland colours over the next couple of weeks, good luck to all of you and your team mates. Enjoy the season, the cricket and the social, and I look forward to seeing all of you over the next few months enjoying your cricket at Falkland.
